Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has targeted young Bundesliga midfielder Tolga Cigerci as a potential summer signing, the Metro reports.
Cigerci is rated at £2m, which is well with Liverpool’s transfer budget.
The Turkish born Wolfsburg star has caps for the Germany Under-19 side, and is currently on loan at Hertha Berlin where he has made 11 appearances so far in the Bundesliga. He is comfortable in a number of midfield positions, but prefers to sit deep and dictate play in the middle of the park with his exceptional array of long and short passes.
In this respect, Cigerci could arrive at Anfield in the summer and provide competition and backup for Brazilian anchorman Lucas. The 26-year-old is currently injured, and Rodgers has had to deploy Coutinho in a deeper central midfield role as a result. The youngster has shone, but the Reds squad undeniably needs strengthening in the summer, with the team likely to be playing Champions League football next year if they continue their current excellent form.
Liverpool thrashed league leaders Arsenal in the Premier League yesterday, but will struggle if they pick up injuries to key players with the squad very thin.
