The France international, who recently came third behind Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and FC Barcelona’s Lionel Messi in the voting for the 2013 Ballon d’Or winner, had surgery on Thursday to free a trapped nerve in his gluteal muscles and remained in a Munich clinic until Sunday.

However, according to the Bundesliga champions, the 30-year-old will not have recovered in time to line up against the north London club in the first leg of their round of 16 clash at the Emirates next Wednesday night.

“An examination on Monday revealed that the bruise, which had pressed on a nerve, was completely removed by surgery last Thursday”, said a statement on Bayern’s official website.

“After healing, the 30-year-old is scheduled to begin exercise therapy later this week and, a week later, he will return to running training.

“Therefore Ribery will miss the next games for the record champions, among them the last-16 tie at Arsenal in the Champions League.”
