AC Milan striker and former Manchester City star Mario Balotelli has emerged as a £25m transfer target for Arsenal, according to Football Italia.

The 23-year-old has been impressing in Serie A since returning to Italy in January 2013 after a turbulent time at the Etihad Stadium.

Balotelli showed he clearly had talent whilst with the Citizens and scored 30 goals in 80 appearances for the Premier League side in all competitions, but the forward’s time at the club was tainted by controversy.

Things finally came to a head when a training ground bust-up between the Italy international and then manager Roberto Mancini was caught by photographers from British newspaper the Daily Mail.

As a result Balotelli was sold to Milan and whilst the seven-time European champions have struggled in the league themselves, the attacker has been lethal and and has 25 goals in 39 games to date – including 13 strikes this season.

It’s this form that is thought to have attracted Gunners boss Arsene Wenger to the Italian, with the 64-year-old keeping a keen eye out for recruitment up-front.

This is because the north London side are a little light in that area with only Olivier Giroud available as a recognised striker in-form, with the backup of Nicklas Bendtner and Yaya Sanogo hardly inspiring confidence.

Although Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott can also play in the position, things have been made even tougher for Wenger due to the Englishman’s long-term absence with a cruciate ligament injury.
