New Nerazzurri owner Erick Thohir is keen to bring in the Argentine youngster, who has been something of an unmitigated disaster since his move to White Hart Lane.
Former boss Andre Villas-Boas brought in Lamela from AS Roma for a club record £30m fee and the 21 year old has managed to score just one goal in 17 appearances for the North London side and has been sidelined with a back injury since the turn of the year.
A move back to Serie A may tempt Lamela but the likelihood of such a deal depends greatly on just how much the Italian side are willing to pay for the Tottenham man.
Chairman Daniel Levy is sure to want to recoup at least two third of the fee he paid for Lamela just six months ago and one wonders if Inter Milan would fork out such a fee.
Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood has been indebted to the form shown by Emmanuel Adebayor in recent weeks, the Togo international scoring six goals in nine Premier League starts, with another Spurs summer signing, Roberto Soldado, also struggling for form.
