The Schalke teenager has impressed many with his displays this term, the 18 year old netting five goals in 11 Bundesliga starts this term, and it’s now been revealed that the German Under 19 international has a £20m release clause.
The clause was added to Mayer’s recently signed contract and could be one that Liverpool would be willing to trigger given the player’s obvious potential.
A move for Meyer would certainly adhere to the youthful transfer policy in operation under Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers and the player’s potential sell-on value could help mitigate the cost of the player.
Rodgers is clearly a manager who is willing to trust to youth, with the likes of John Flanagan, Andre Wisdom, Raheem Sterling and Jordan Ibe all seeing first team action under the Northern Irishman.
Meyer operates in an attacking midfield role and could well be seen by Liverpool as a long term successor for 33 year old captain Steven Gerrard.
