The centre half, 28, has started just three league games this season, with Arsene Wenger favouring Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker in the centre of defence, and the Belgium international has reportedly told the Gunners boss of his desire to depart.

Vermaelen has previous been linked to Napoli and Zenit St Petersburg, and, despite his lack of game-time, is set to feature for Belgium at next summer’s World Cup.

With Wenger’s de factor fourth choice centre half Bacary Sagna stalling on a new contract, it looks likely the French tactician will have to enter the transfer market for at least two new defenders this summer.

The left-footer joined the North London outfit from Ajax in 2009 and has made over 100 Premier League appearances for the club.
