Wenger is ready to offer £15m for the French midfielder, an offer the south-coast side may find hard to turn down, and is seen by the Gunners manager as a replacement Mikel Arteta, who has had an up and down campaign this season.

Schneiderlin is into his sixth season at St Mary’s and has helped the club to promotions from League One and the Championship and has excelled in the Premier League and must surely be tempted by a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Arteta has not been his usually reliable self in the holding role in the centre of Arsenal’s midfield and could well be sacrificed by Wenger at the end of the season.

Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino may well see his successful side picked apart by prospective suitors with the likes of England international truo Jay Rodriguez, Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana sure to be interesting a number of fellow Premier League sides.

Similarly teenager Luke Shaw could be snapped up at the end of the current campaign.

Arsenal have previously raided Southampton to sign Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and may well see Schneiderlin as the third such signing.
