Rodgers had initially seen the 22 year old Colombian as a potential replacement for Anfield goal machine Luis Suarez but having tied down the forward to a long term contract the Liverpool manager now wants to bring in Muriel to help beef up his options up front.

Summer signing Iago Aspas hasn’t impressed and may be sold, loaned out Italian Fabio Borini may make a permanent exit and loaned in winger Victor Moses is unlikely to be purchased so Muriel could well be a sensible addition to offer Rodgers an alternative to first choice pairing Suarez and Daniel Sturridge.

Wolfsburg and Juventus are also said to be keen on Muriel, who has struggled to retain the great form he showed last season.

Muriel netted 11 goals in 15 Serie A starts last season but has scored just four goals this season though he is still something of a bit-part player at Udinese.
