Sources in Portugal are claiming that several delegates from the defending Premier League champions were at the Estadio Jose Alvalade this weekend and the 21-year-old was the main focus of their attention.
United boss David Moyes has apparently made the young centre midfielder one of his primary transfer targets ahead of the summer transfer window and is now looking to step up his attempts to secure his future.
And reports in Portugal have claimed that Moyes is so keen on the player that he has sent scouts over to watch him at least 12 times so far this season as he looks to weigh up his strengths and weaknesses before making a concrete move.
The Portuguese international has a £36m release clause installed in his contract, and the fee has not been thought to scare the Red Devils off as they look to new blood to solve their problems in the middle of the pitch.
