The experienced Spain international’s current contract with the La Liga champions runs out at the end of this campaign, meaning that as of July 1 2014 the shot stopper will be available to purhase on a lucrative Bosman-style free transfer.

However, initially it had been expected that Valdes, who has already announced his intention to quit Camp Nou this summer, was joining big-spending Ligue 1 side AS Monaco after the 32-year-old gave a verbal agreement to move to the South of France.

But with the deadline having now come and passed for the Spaniard to actually put pen to paper on a pre-contract agreement with Monaco, the French giants’ billionaire owner Dmitry Rybolovlev is now said to be set to switch his focus elsewhere, with Hannover’s Ron-Robert Zieler now his preferred choice.

All of which has opened the path clear for City to now make their own move for the Barca star.
