Man United have earmarked a move for Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen to replace exit bound captain Nemanja Vidic according to the Daily Mail.

Old Trafford boss David Moyes has been linked with a number of potential additions to strengthen a defence that will not only see the Serbian centre-back leave but will also probably allow Rio Ferdinand to make an exit this summer.

A move for 26 year old Belgian Vertonghen could be a wise one to consider and one imagines that if Tottenham fail to secure a top four finish then the former Ajax man would be even more tempted by a move to join Man United.

Vertonghen had an excellent first season at White Hart Lane but has perhaps failed to have the same impact this term but is still undoubtedly a very talented adaptable defender.

The intelligent Spurs man can play at centre-back or at left-back and has even been known to operate in a defensive midfield role.

Tottenham would be loathed to lose Vertonghen but may struggle to keep hold of the player if his head is turned by Man United’s apparent interest.
