England Squad To Face Denmark Confirmed: Liverpool Star Sterling And Southampton’s Shaw Earn Chances

England manager Roy Hodgson has selected his 30 man squad to face Denmark in one of the Three Lions’ final international friendlies before the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Southampton left back Luke Shaw earns a first senior call-up having impressed in the Premier League for the past season and a half, and the youngster plays with a verve and maturity well beyond his 18 years.

He is joined by another teenager in Raheem Sterling, who has been in remarkable form for Liverpool form over the last few months, having taken his chance very well upon Reds team-mate Daniel Sturridge suffering injury.

The shocks are elsewhere in the team, with Tom Cleverley and Jermain Defoe somehow winning call-ups despite underwhelming recent performances.

Defoe has only played just over half an hour of Premier League football in 2014 – and just 243 minutes since England’s last game in November – while Cleverley has been castigated for his tepid performances in the Manchester United midfield.

The full squad follows below:

Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Steven Caulker (Cardiff City), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Luke Shaw (Southampton), Chris Smalling (Manchester United), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur).
