The Ivory Coast international has been one the Magpies’ best players so far at St James’ Park in this campaign, with the all-action 27-year-old having turned in a particularly impressive display during City’s 2-0 win in the north east earlier this year.

However, with City head coach Manuel Pellegrini understood to have lost interest in previous midfield targets Fernando at FC Porto and Southampton’s Victor Wanyama, the Premier League giants are now on the look out for a new defensive midfielder for next season.

And that is because the experienced Chilean manager is said to have decided to offload Spain international Javi Garcia at the end of the season, despite the midfielder having really caught the eye when handed a first-team opportunity by the City boss in recent weeks.

The Ivorian’s close friendship with City midfielder Yaya Toure, meanwhile, is also thought to be a key factor in persuading the north-west side to move for the 27-year-old who is contracted to the Magpies until June 2017.
