The experienced Serbia international’s current contract with the Premier League champions now only runs until June 30 2014 and so the central defender will be available to purchase on a lucrative free transfer this summer.

And initially it had been widely assumed that the defender would be swapping Old Trafford for San Siro next season after officials from the Italian side flew to London last week in order to meet with Vidic’s agent and discuss the possibility of the Serb joining Inter this summer.

The Italian side are set to embark on a massive rebuilding of their first-team squad come the end of the campaign, with the club also hoping to sign Red Devils left-back Patrice Evra and Arsenal right-back Bacary Sagna to Milan.

However, their hopes of landing Vidic are now under threat from Turkish giants Trabzonspor, who are said to be preparing a big-money contract offer for the 32-year-old United skipper in order to try to persuade the player to spurn Inter’s advances in favour of a move to Istanbul.
