Despite their already impressive season, Liverpool want to strengthen the squad in the summer, and have earmarked Benfica’s 26-year-old Nicolas Gaitan as a potential target, talkSPORT reports.

The Argentine playmaker, who has won six caps for his country since making his debut in 2009, has impressed in Portugal ever since arriving in 2010 from Boca Juniors.

He is usually deployed from the left, although he is equally capable of playing a  more pivotal role just behind the striker, and it’s perhaps this versatility that has encouraged the Reds to consider a £16m bid.

Liverpool have publicly missed out on attacking midfield targets over the past twelve months, and will be desperate not see Gaitan slip through their fingers as well. Moves for the likes of Willian, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Mohamed Salah and Yevhen Konoplyanka all fell through, but impressive on pitch performances have helped fans forget about recent failures in the transfer market.

Manager Brendan Rodgers though is determined that if his side do finish in the top four (as now expected), they will take advantage of their improved prestige and financial position to prepare for a potential title challenge next term.

Scouts have watched Gaitan in action all season, and been impressed with his trickery and excellent technical ability.
