The 23-year-old playmaker is a reported target for both United and Real Madrid, but Bayern want the Turkish-born German international to follow Mario Goetze and Robert Lewandowski to the Allianz Arena.

Gundogan’s deal expires at in summer 2005 and a long-term back injury has left his future at Dortmund uncertain, with the Bundesliga club reportedly considering cashing in on the £25m-rated star.

On Monday, Bayern supremo Karl-Heinz Rummenigge dismissed reports the Champions League holders would not signing any more players from their rivals, insisting Dortmund stars were ‘not taboo’.

But Madrid remains the most likely destination for Gundogan, with a swap deal for Nuri Sahin, who is currently on loan at Dortmund, from the Santiago Bernabeu, an option.

United, however, remain keen and there are similarities between Gundogan’s position and that of Shinji Kagawa, who joined United two summers ago form Dortmund.
