The highly rated Brazil international very nearly joined the La Liga giants last summer, with Barca lodging a bid believed to be worth £20m for the centre back cum holding midfielder.
However, that offer was immediately rejected out of hand by the west London club, who informed their rivals from Camp Nou that they valued the 26-year-old at around the £50m mark in an attempt to end their interest in the player.
But Barca now need a new central defender to partner Spain international Gerard Pique at the back in Catalunya next season after the decision on Tuesday by club captain Carles Puyol that he would finally be hanging up his boots at the end of the campaign.
And as a result, it is now expected that Barcelona will return with an improved offer of £25m for the Brazilian this summer, with the Spaniards thought to want to be able to wrap up a deal for Luiz before this summer’s Fifa World Cup kicks off in the player’s homeland in June.
