The Liverpool striker continued his fine run of goal-scoring form with a well-placed header after Adam Lallana’s fine turn and cross.
England could have been out of sight by the time Sturridge broke the deadlock but Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel made a series of fine stops for the visitors.
There was an impressive debut for Southampton’s teenage left-back Luke Shaw but his clubmate Lallana was the star of the show, with a hugely-impressive cameo.
