The playmaker, 22, was clattered by Liverpool’s Daniel Agger in the 12th minute and, despite appearing to be in some agony immediately after the challenge, Wilshere played for an hour before being replaced by Adam Lallana.

Arsenal said scans had revealed a crack to a small bone in the midfielder’s left foot – the navicular. The club said Wilshere had not injured the bone previously.

The news will come as a blow to the Gunners, who face a huge month which includes an FA Cup sixth round with Everton, the second leg of their Champions League last-16 clash with Bayern Munich and league games against Tottenham, Chelsea, Swansea and Man City which will shape their season.

However, Aaron Ramsey returned to training this week, while January signing Kim Kallstrom should be fit to face the Toffees at the weekend, meaning boss Arsene Wenger has options to cover for Wilshere.
