Premier League giants Liverpool are interested in signing in-demand Red Bull Salzburg defender Martin Hinteregger at the end of the season, according to reports in the Observer.

The Merseysiders are believed to have sent scouts over to Austria last week to watch the young centre back in action first hand as he won just his second cap for Austria in a friendly international with Uruguay in Klagenfurt.

And by all accounts, the Reds were said to be hugely impressed with the 21-year-old’s display against the South Americans, with Hinteregger having been detailed to mark Liverpool forward Luis Suarez during the encounter.

The Austrian, who is contracted to Salzburg until June 30 2018, is known for the physical aspect of his game, which would make Hinteregger an ideal player for the Premier League.

However, Liverpool head coach Brendan Rodgers knows that he is likely to face stiff competition for Hinteregger’s signature from Premier League rivals Arsenal, with the north London club having also scouted the tall and imposing central defender extensively over the course of this season with a view to signing the starlet this summer too.
