Man City boss Manuel Pellegrini has set aside £50m of his transfer budget as he targets Southampton teen Luke Shaw and Everton midfielder Ross Barkley according to the Daily Star.

Pellegrini is aware that he needs to increase the number of home-grown players in his squad, not least as two of those who currently qualify, Micah Richards and Jack Rodwell, could well be deemed surplus to requirements in the summer and the Chilean manager has therefore set his sights on two of England’s hottest young talents.

Man City are ready to fork out big sums for both England internationals though there is bound to be a great deal of interest in acquiring their services.

Shaw could well be seen by both Chelsea and Man United as a long term replacement for Ashley Cole and Patrice Evra respectively and Southampton face something of a fight to keep hold of the talented left-back.

Pellegrini may well feel Shaw is a more consistent performer than the likes of Gael Clichy and Aleksandar Kolarov.

Barkley is also said to be on Man United’s wish-list, with former Toffees boss David Moyes looking to conduct another Goodison Park raid.

The attack minded midfielder certainly has a bright future but one that may be better served at a club that can offer him Champions League football and a shot at securing major honours, and as such Roberto Martinez must fear the loss of the 20 year old schemer.
