Premier League champions Manchester United are hoping to be able to sign out-of-favour Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen as a replacement for their own departing skipper Nemanja Vidic at Old Trafford next season, according to reports in the Sun on Sunday.

The Red Devils are already preparing for life without their experienced centre back at the Theatre of Dreams next season, with new head coach David Moyes having now identified the Gunners’ Belgium international as being the man that he wants to take over from Vidic at the heart of the Premier League giants’ back four next season.

The 28-year-old has once again largely found himself surplus to requirements at the Emirates so far in this campaign, with Gunners boss Arsene Wenger opting to go with Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker as his preferred central-defensive partnership at the back in north London.

And with the Belgium’s current contract in the capital now only running until June 30 2015, United are said to be hopeful of persuading their arch rivals to part company with the defender this summer, especially with the player sharing the same agent, Kees Vos, as United’s former Arsenal captain Robin van Persie.
