Chelsea have been linked with a surprise move for Barcelona midfielder Javier Mascherano according to Football Direct News.

This source claims that the 29 year old may be set for a Nou Camp exit and Jose Mourinho is keen to bring in the tough tackler to Stamford Bridge, a move that would presumably lead to the exit of defensive midfielder John Obi Mikel, who is already struggling for first team action at the West London club.

The Argentine international has been left warming the Barcelona bench on occasion this term and has been used as a makeshift centre-back by the Catalan club, with Sergio Busquets usually getting the nod as the club’s defensive midifeld option.

The former Liverpool man has more than proven himself in Premier League action and is an experienced top class performer so one can see why Mourinho may be interested in the Barcelona man if he were to be made available.

Mascherano moved to the La Liga side in 2010 and has made a total of 169 appearances for Barcelona, playing a pivotal part in the club’s domestic and European successes.
