Blues boss Jose Mourinho has apparently told the club’s hierarchy that he is on the hunt for a world class striker at the end of the season in a bid to solve his side’s goalscoring problems.

And despite links to Luis Suarez, Gonzalo Higuain, Wayne Rooney and Radamel Falcao, Mourinho is believed to have told Chelsea that Costa is the man he wants.

The Brazilian-born Spanish international is enjoying another prolific season in front of goal this term, bagging 21 goals in 26 appearances so few this term, and PSG and Real Madrid have been taking an interest too, though Chelsea are thought to be in pole position to land his signature.

Chelsea currently enjoy a good relationship with Atletico after establishing a deal for goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to spend time in the Spanish capital on loan, and though the Belgian international won’t be allowed to stay beyond the current season relations between the two clubs are still good.

Chelsea are thought to value Costa at £27million – an amount below his release clause, but a fee that could be accepted if the player pushes for a switch away and they will look to tie up the move before the player heads off to the World Cup in June.
