Tottenham are weighing up the prospect of launching a free transfer bid for Man City veteran Joleon Lescott according to Football Direct News.

The North London club are apparently fearful that Belgian international Jan Vertonghen could seek a summer exit if his side are unable to secure a Champions League berth and as such have identified England man Lescott as a possible replacement.

The 31 year old was at fault for Barcelona’s opening goal against Man City last night and is a player who is perhaps past his best, however as the former Everton man would be available for nothing one imagines there will be plenty of interest in his services.

White Hart Lane chairman Daniel Levy won’t be so ready to bankroll the club this summer having seen Spurs effectively move backwards since investing £110m in new additions last summer and as such a move for Lescott makes financial, if not footballing, sense.

West Ham are also keen on Lescott and no doubt other sides will look to register their interest once the current campaign comes to a close.

Lescott has made 144 appearances for Man City since his £22m move to the Etihad Stadium back in August 2009.
