The England international has found regular playing time difficult to come by under new boss Manuel Pellegrini this season and a summer exit from the Etihad Stadium has been touted.

Richards has just over 18 months left on his current deal at the club and has caught the attention of a number of Premier League sides, though it has now emerged that Roma could be in pole position for his signature.

The 25-year-old was a key figure in the City starting line up until the 2012 season, but since then has made just 17 appearances as he has fallen behind Pablo Zabaleta in the pecking order. He has also failed to add to his 13 caps for the national team since then too.

Roma are thought to be keen to add a number of new players to their squad this summer as their title challenge has fallen by the wayside lately, and they have apparently identified the Birmingham-born defender as the ideal man to put pressure on the ageing Maicon.
