The 28-year-old has claimed that his vocal nature on the pitch and brutal honesty with his teammates makes him an excellent candidate to take over from Nemanja Vidic at United and Steven Gerrard with England.

“I’ve done it a few times and, if the manager wants me to be the captain, I would have no problem with that. I would take it with both hands,” he told club magazine Inside United.

“Whether I’ve got the armband or not, I always feel I’m quite vocal on the pitch. I try to help the players when I feel I can and say what I think. I believe that’s the most important thing.”

Vidic will be vacating the captains armband at the end of the season as he jets off to join Inter Milan when his contract expires, while Gerrard, 33, will most likely be captaining his country for the last time at this summer’s World Cup.
