The 26-year-old has been high on City’s shopping list for several month now, and the club missed out on striking a deal for him during the January transfer window, but they now face some stiff competition for his signature from the side from west London.

A source close to the Stamford Bridge outfit claimed that boss Jose Mourinho has identified the Brazilian as the ideal man to replace the ageing Frank Lampard, who has still yet to be offered another extension on his deal that expires at the end of the current campaign.

Fernando was expected to sign a pre-contract agreement with Man City after coming close to completing a switch to the Etihad as his contract with the Portuguese giants wound down.

However, he renegotiated his deal in Porto and put pen-to-paper on a fresh deal that will run until the summer of 2017.

But Chelsea have not been perturbed by the £30m release clause that has been installed in his new deal and will look to make their move in the summer.
