Liverpool will attempt to lure Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema to Anfield this summer according to the Metro.

Brendan Rodgers is ready to make a move for the 26 year old French international but only if Liverpool qualify for the Champions League.

On the face of it such a move would appear to make little sense for the Bernabeu star.

Benzema has been a regular under Carlo Ancelotti, no outfield player has played more for the Italian, and there seems little reason why the former Lyon man would consider leaving the Spanish giants.

Equally it doesn’t appear that Rodgers needs to invest heavily to boost a strike-force that includes in-form pair Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge.

Clearly the Liverpool boss would be keen to bring in alternative back-up options but would be better off targeting a youthful pretender who can act as a long term prospect for the Merseyside club.

Benzema started the season in sedate fashion but has been in outstanding form of late, playing his part in Real Madrid’s current 30 match unbeaten run.

The lethal finisher has netted 23 goals in all competitions as well as providing 11 assists across all competitions this season.
