Rodgers has primarily suffered headaches thanks to not being able to adequately fill the left-back slot, but because of Glen Johnson’s injury problems this term the club have frequently been left stretched at the back and will now look to the Portuguese ace to help ease the crisis.

Cancelo is thought to have caught the eye of Liverpool’s scouting team whilst playing for Benfica’s youth and reserve side’s. He also made his bow for the senior side at the end of January.

Benfica are thought to be asking for around £10m for the teenager, who represented his country at under-19 level as well as taking part in last year’s under-20 World Cup.

He is appealing to Rodgers as his versatility would see him capable of filling in on either flank, and his ability to drive forward as well as track back are big bonuses as well.
