Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a huge boost in their quest to sign defender Adil Rami after it emerged that AC Milan have opted against turning his loan move into a permanent deal at the end of the season, according to Football Direct News.

The 28-year-old linked up with the Serie A giants in January from Spanish side Valencia, and though he has found the net twice in just seven games for the Milanese side, his all-round defensive displays have not been good enough to convince coach Clarence Seedorf into handing him a longer deal.

The France international had previously been a transfer target for both Manchester United and Arsenal, but he recently became a top priority for Spurs, who will now most likely step up their efforts to bring him to White Heart Lane this summer.

Spurs are in desperate need of some defensive quality after several frail performances from their current crop this term, and they are aware that they may have to replace Jan Vertonghen, who hinted that he could leave this summer for a club able to offer him Champions League football.
