Torres, who turns 30 this week, remains a fan favourite at Atletico, where he is affectionately nicknamed ‘El Nino’.

Through mutual friends, Torres has let Diego Simeone know that he wants to return to the Spanish capital and the Atletico boss is keen for to re-sign the striker, according to the Sun.

Simeone is set to lose £30m-rated Diego Costa this summer and Chelsea is the Brazilian-born Spain international’s most likely destination.

But there has been no suggestion of a swap deal yet, although that could change in the coming months.

Torres joined Chelsea from Liverpool in a £50m club record deal in January 2012 but he has struggled in West London, and boasts just four league goals in 21 appearances this season – less than both Demba Ba and Samuel Eto’o, who have started fewer matches.
