Chelsea are reportedly leading the chase to sign AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli according to Italian source CalcioMercato.

The former Man City man has come in for a lot of criticism in recent weeks and is strongly linked with a San Siro exit this summer.

The 23 year old has had little trouble finding the back of the net since moving back to Italy in January 2013 but his attitude has been called into question following fairly drab displays against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League clash between the two clubs.

Jose Mourinho knows Balotelli well from his time in charge of Inter Milan and the Blues boss may feel he can get the most out of the undoubtedly talented Italian international.

Chelsea’s current crop of strikers have all failed to make a consistent enough impact and both Fernando Torres and Demba Ba could be offloaded whilst Samuel Eto’o may well not be offered a new contract when his short term deal comes to a close at the end of the current campaign.

AC Milan are in the bottom half of the Serie A table and are way off the Champions League qualification spots but Balotelli has still managed to net 14 goals in all competitions this term and scored 12 in 13 domestic fixtures last term.
