The experienced Bosnia and Herzegovina international has been targeted by a number of big-name Premier League clubs in the past, including the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City and champions Manchester United too.

However, with the Potters having consistently demanded a transfer fee in the region of £15m for their shot stopper, those top-flight heavyweights have all baulked at paying that much for Begovic, although the price tag does not appear to be putting los Blancos off making a move for the keeper this summer.

Madrid themselves are set to be on the look out for a new No 1 with current Spain internationals Diego Lopez and Iker Casillas both expected to quit the Santiago Bernabeu at the end of the campaign, with the former possibly heading to either AC Milan or City.

As a result, Begovic could be on his way to the Spanish capital.
