The 28-year-old left St James’ Park to return to his native France during the January transfer window, but had been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates in the months preceding.

Cabaye had pushed for a move to north London last summer, but Magpies boss Alan Pardew responded by taking him out of the team for the first few weeks of the season, and now the Frenchman has gone on record to insist that he would have loved to have joined the Gunners last year.

“I would have liked to play for Wenger last summer but, unfortunately, it didn’t happen,” he said.

Cabaye also claimed that he came close to joining PSG earlier on in his career before heading to Northeast England instead.

“I was approached by PSG and Kombouare but it didn’t happen, then I went to England,” he said.

However, he is now fully focussed on playing for the side from the French capital and is eager to help them go on to Ligue 1 and Champions League glory.

“PSG is prepared to win everything,” he added. “The players share a mentality making them wanting to go as far as possible.

“If we have the possibility to snatch the Champions League, we will do it. [Zlatan] Ibra[himovic] is doing extraordinary things and Thiago [Silva] is a monster at the back. It’s a new challenge. I want to last here and to win. It is my destiny.”
