Arsenal are reported to have made an approach for experienced Brazilian forward Fred according to Football Direct News.

Emirates Stadium boss Arsene Wenger would do well to strengthen an attack that relies heavily on Frenchman Olivier Giroud and now the North London club have identified Fluminense marksman Fred as a viable summer target.

The former Lyon man has had something of a resurgence since returning to his native Brazil, scoring 112 goals in 176 appearances over the past five seasons and is sure to be part of Felipe Scolari’s 2014 World Cup squad.

Fred has also netted an impressive 16 goals in 31 national team appearances and could be tempted by a Premier League switch.

The rangy forward has just over a year to run on his current deal and if Arsenal can pick him up for £7m then they will have secured something of a bargain signing.

Wenger has seen both Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott ruled out for much of the current campaign, leaving Giroud to plough a lone furrow for much of 2013/14.
