The Portuguese international has gone on to play an important part of Carlo Ancelotti’s squad this season, and is still under contract at the club until the summer of 2016.

But despite that, the 31-year-old is expected to be made available at the end of the season as Ancelotti looks to continue bringing young France international Raphael Varane through into the first team to play alongside Sergio Ramos.

The former Porto star has gone on to make over 200 appearances for the side from the Spanish capital since joining back in 2007, and his performances in the white jersey have continued to impress City gaffer Manuel Pellegrini.

Pellegrini has had experience of working with Pepe before after the two spent a season together during the Chilean’s time in charge at the Bernabeu in 2010, and is looking to bring him on board to line up alongside Vincent Kompany.

Pellegrini has been concerned with the state of City’s defence this season as he looks ready to ship the likes of Micah Richards and Joleon Lescott out of the club at the end of the campaign.
