The Catalan side have made a new centre-back their number one priority this summer following the announcement by Carles Puyol that he is to leave the club at the end of the season.

They had been interested in Agger earlier on in the season after their scouting team identified him as the ideal man to plug the gaps on their back line.

However, Liverpool issued a hands off warning over him and Barca dropped the issue, but in the wake of Puyol’s announcement they are now set to make a return for him at the end of the campaign.

His physical presence, ability on the ball as well as being left-footed which would provide balance alongside right-footed Gerard Pique are all seen as big advantages in signing Agger.

Liverpool have looked shaky at the back at times this season with manager Brendan Rodgers frequently rotating his defence in order to strike a suitable balance.

But once Puyol leaves Barca will have just three defenders at their disposal in Gerard Pique, Marc Bartra and Javier Mascherano.
