The England international’s current deal with the Reds now only runs until the end of June 2015 and despite the club having started talks with the player last summer about extending his stay at Anfield, those discussions have since been halted as Liverpool concentrate on trying to win a first league title since 1990.

However, it is also understood that the club’s American owners the Fenway Sports Group to offer big-money contract extensions to those players over the age of 30 and with the attacking right back reaching that age in August, it is unlikely that Johnson will be handed an improvement on his current £110,000-per-week deal.

Equally, though, the Englishman recently revealed just how happy he is on Merseyside at the moment: “I’ve loved every minute of the five years I’ve been here and I’d love to stay but really the only truth in it is that I’ve not been offered a new contract on any level.

“No-one has come to me from Liverpool at all. I don’t know the situation the club are in or if they want to renew it. So I’ve not got a decision to make other than to see my contract out because no-one is telling me any different.”
