Liverpool have identified Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera as a potential long term replacement for veteran captain Steven Gerrard according to Football Direct News.

The 24 year old has previously been targeted by Man United and Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers wants to bring in the talented midfielder this summer, knowing that the the bonus of Champions League football could well aid their push to capture the Basque star.

Herrera is into his third season at the San Mames club, helping Athletic Bilbao to the final of the Europa League and the Copa del Rey in his first campaign, and has already racked up 119 appearances.

His form has helped Bilbao to cement their place in fourth behind the runaway leading group of Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Barcelona but a fresh challenge in the Premier League may tempt Herrera.

Rodgers doesn’t have all that many central midfield options to pick from with only the aforementioned Gerrard, Jordan Henderson, Joe Allen and Lucas Leiva available to the Northern Irishman.

However a move for Herrera would not be cheap with the player having a £31m release clause.
