The Argentinian international was wanted by former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, and new boss David Moyes had continued his interest last summer, but a move failed to materialise.

However, Moyes finally appears to have won the race as he looks to make some important defensive additions as well overhauling the midfield, which is his priority.

Captain Nemanja Vidic is joining Inter Milan and left-back Patrice Evra is widely expected to follow. However, Moyes could have to find a replacement for Rio Ferdinand as well, with rumours circulating he is set to retire.

Garay will have one more year left on his current deal over the summer and Benfica are keen to do business now rather than wait and lose money on him at the end of next season.

The Portuguese giants are hoping to get the best possible price for the 27-year-old as they will have to give half of whatever they earn to his former club Real Madrid.

However, a swap deal involving United winger Nani could also be on the cards.
