The starlet stopper is currently enjoying his third consecutive loan spell at the Vicente Calderon and with Petr Cech still holding court between the sticks Courtois’ future at the club has come in for some serious speculation.

Courtois is yet to make his competitive debut for Chelsea, three years after joining in a £7m deal from Genk.

But the Blues are still keen on offering him an extension to stay at the club and Atletico president Cerezo has said that his side will not try to force Chelsea into handing him over to them.

“Initially he was loaned out to us for a year but now we’ve had him for three seasons,” he said.

“Thibaut is very pleased to be at the Vicente Calderon right now although he is prepared to fight for his place with Petr Cech at Stamford Bridge.

“His future does not depend on us, so we have a big challenge over the summer to strengthen our squad.

“Our sporting director (Jose Luis Perez Caminero) has told me that we should not fear the big clubs that are interested in our footballers. That is a welcome relief because this team is still developing.”
