Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has earmarked Real Madrid left-back Marcelo as the ideal man to put an end to the club’s problems in that position by lining up an astonishing £25m move for the player at the end of the season.

The Reds have often struggled to to adequately fill the position this season, but CaughtOffside understands that with the club likely to be able to offer Champions League football next season Rodgers is looking to go all out and sign some proven quality in the position to ensure that it won’t give him any selection headaches in the future.

Liverpool brought in Aly Cissokho on loan from Valencia in the off season, but he has failed to live up to the hype that surrounded him and recently the club announced that they would not be taking up the option to purchase him outright at the end of the current campaign.

The club have also seen the fortunes of Jose Enrique take a dramatic nose dive over the past year, as injuries and a loss of form have cast doubts over his long term future there.

With that in mind Rodgers has cast his net wide across Europe to look for a new left-back that can make the position his own, and instead of plumping for an unknown youngster he has instead opted to spring for an established, world class name in a bid to get the fans excited for next season.

Liverpool are still very much in the title race, and Rodgers knows that victory would give him the opportunity to purchase an entirely different class of player, but by the same token he is also aware that he can not afford to make his moves based on that alone. However, whatever money the club receive for their qualification for next season’s Champions League will give them a huge shot in the arm.

Marcelo has continued to be a regular fixture in the Madrid side this season, and though he is playing well coach Carlo Ancelotti is said to be open to offers for a number of his stars, including the Brazilian. Marcelo joined the club back in 2007 and has gone on to make 261 appearances, scoring 18 goals and chalking up 37 assist in the process.
