Man United boss David Moyes has earmarked a move for Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen as he seeks to find an able replacement for Nemanja Vidic.

The Daily Mail claim that the 28 year old Belgian is a target and that the fact the Gunners star not only shares the same agent as Robin Van Persie but is also good friend’s with the Dutchman.

Moyes may well look to enlist Van Persie’s help in pursuit of Vermaelen, who may well be tempted by the chance to secure a move to Old Trafford.

Vermaelen has been frozen out of Arsene Wenger’s starting eleven for over a year, with Arsene Wenger seeing Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker as his first choice central defensive pairing, leaving the former Ajax man having to consider his future at the North London club.

With Vidic on his way to Inter Milan and Rio Ferdinand’s contract set to expire, there is room for Vermaelen to make an impact, and indeed if Patrice Evra also leaves this summer then the Arsenal man could be seen as an option to fill the left-back void.
