The burly centre-back has been a key player in the Swansea side ever since they won promotion to the Premier League back in 2012.

However, Williams has hinted that though he has deep connections to the club, having made over 250 appearances since arriving in 2008, he feels the time has come to embark on a new challenge.

His current deal expires at the end of next season, and he is holding off fresh talks as he feels that at 29 the time is right to move on before it gets too late for him to play for a top club.

The Wales skipper held two separate meetings with the Gunners last summer over a possible move, but Arsene Wenger’s reluctance to spend any money meant that he stayed put.

But Wenger may look to revive his interest in him this time around as there are fears that Thomas Vermaelen will ask to leave this summer.
