United had shown a tentative interest in the 23-year-old before the January transfer window opened, as David Moyes continues to search for a replacement for the veteran Patrice Evra.

The under fire Scot had viewed him as a cheaper alternative to Southampton starlet Luke Shaw, but his reluctance to make a bid in the new year has given Chelsea the impetus to declare their own interest and now Moyes faces a struggle to come out on top in the race for the player’s signature.

Mourinho has used right-back Cesar Azpilicueta out of position on the left-hand side for the majority of the season and wants a specialist left-back ahead of next season.

Sandro is believed to have a release clause installed in his contract for around £40m, but both Chelsea and United are hopeful of being able to convince the Portuguese giants to sell for considerably less at £15m.

The full-back joined Porto from Santos in 2011, and has won two league titles during his time in Portugal.
