The 22-year-old is currently spending the season on loan with Premier League strugglers Sunderland after being unable to nail down a regular spot in Brendan Rodgers’ side, and sources close to the Merseyside club claim that he has been told that he has no future at Anfield when his loan spell finishes.

The player’s compatriot Franco Baldini, who is in charge of player recruitment at White Hart Lane, has identified the forward as a useful addition to a squad which is severely short of options in the final third of the pitch.

Spurs have had their problems in front of goal this term, with England international Jermain Defoe being sold to MLS side Toronto FC and £26m man Roberto Soldado finding Premier League football more difficult than first thought.

A source close to Baldini has said that he would ideally like to add two strikers to the club’s ranks this summer and is waiting to hear back from Rodgers over the Italian’s status within the squad.

He has not been a regular goalscorer for Sunderland but did produce a fine strike to give them a shock lead in the League Cup final against Manchester City, although the Blues eventually ran out 3-1 winners.
