United boss David Moyes has reportedly had the Italian stopper, who recently made his international debut against Spain, extensively scouted this season and is now preparing a deal to bring him to the club as a replacement for the Inter Milan bound Nemanja Vidic at the end of the season.

The former Toffees manager has apparently said that he doesn’t think the player’s connections with United’s arch rivals Liverpool will cause any problems with the club’s fans as he only made a few fleeting appearances for the Reds in 2006 before leaving for Parma via Argentinian giants Boca Juniors.

The 28-year-old is understood to be interested in a return to England and, like Moyes, does not think his Liverpool history will be a problem.

However, United may face some competition for his signature as both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are said to be sizing him up as they prepare to lose centre-backs of their own this summer.
