The Gunners club captain, 28, looks certain to leave North London this summer after failing to displace Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker as the club’s first choice defensive pairing.

Vermaelen has made just six Premier League starts all season and will be allowed to depart by boss Arsene Wenger, who cannot guarantee the Belgium international first team football.

CaughtOffside understands Everton are keen to sign the versatile defender and preliminary talks between the player’s agent and Goodison officials have already taken place.

Toffees boss Roberto Martinez wants a new centre half in the summer, Phil Jagielka, Antolin Alcaraz and Sylvain Distin all the wrong side of 30.

Vermaelen would be open to a move to Everton, who may pip Arsenal to fourth place and a Champions League finish, but he will have to take a significant pay-cut on his £70,000-a-week wages while Arsenal may demand at least the £10m they paid for the player, which could prove problematic.

The defender is still hoping to attract one of Europe’s top clubs, however, and knows a strong World Cup could attract possible suitors.

Everton already boast one Belgium international in Kevin Mirallas and the winger – plus former Toffee Marouane Fellaini – have said told Vermaelen to join the Merseyside club.
