The German international has caught the eye of a number of clubs this season and United were thought to be in pole position to land his signature at the end of the season, but sources close to Stamford Bridge have suggested that the Blues will look to jump the queue on a deal as they look to boost their own striking options.

The west London outfit are keen to reunite Kruse with his international team-mate Andre Schurrle, who has made a good impression after a slow start to life in the Premier League.

United are still watching the player closely, though, and they are said to be acutely aware that they may face some significant competition from elsewhere to bring him on board and will look to act fast to ward off any interest from other interested parties.

Kruse has bagged himself 11 goals in the Bundesliga this term and will have three years remaining on his current deal when the transfer window re-opens in the summer.
